The Muffsy Phono Preamp is, and will continue to be an MM phono stage. Moving magnet and moving coil cartridges require different operational amplifiers, so a combination of MM and MC is not feasible at this size and price point.

Until now, the only way to use the Muffsy with moving coil cartridges ...

The signal to noise ratio (SNR) compares the level of the audio signal to the background noise. An SNR of at least 65 dB is what's needed to have a completely silent phono stage. The Muffsy Phono Preamp's SNR, with OPA2134, comes in at 79.46 dB as shown below.

The measurement of signal to noise ratio...

NOTE:

This modification is only intended for the Muffsy Phono Preamp together with the Muffsy Power Supply and Back Panel in the recommended B0905 enclosure. Before you try this, have a look at the other ways of eliminating hum.

We've seen how the RIAA filter behaves with low and very low capacitor values. (See all simulation articles here) Now let's have a look at what happens if the capacitor values are higher than the recommended ones.

This is the Muffsy Phono Preamp with capacitor values that are 2.5% higher than specifi...

I wanted to know what happened to the Muffsy RIAA compliance if the capacitors were out of spec, and started with a plausible scenario where the capacitors were 3% below their stated values.

This time, lets see what happens if the capacitor values are extremely low. Let's say they're 10% below what ...

We've seen some revisions of the Muffsy Phono Preamp, from green to red,  through blue and finally the black PP-3. Now get ready for a new one, only this time you can't buy it from here.

The question of a more generic circuit board that will accept other components than the ones included in the...

The RIAA equalization added to vinyl records can and do vary wildly, and you might rightfully say that a phono stage's RIAA compliance doesn't matter too much.

It's still a standard, and it should be one of the considerations when choosing a phono stage.

You now have a third choice of operational amplifiers for the Muffsy Phono Preamp, the NJM2068D from New Japan Radio (datasheet, pdf).

The NJM2068D is a great op amp that sits between the NE5532 and OPA2134 performance wise. It draws less current, so it will be the best choice for battery powered Muf...

About 10% of the customers have found it worthwhile to review the Muffsy products on Tindie

It's always very interesting to hear what people think, and it is especially rewarding when they are happy.

After receiving quite a few requests, it's now time for an upgrade of both the Muffsy Phono Preamp and the Power Supply. Both products are available on Tindie, right now!

You can finally build the complete Muffsy Phono Preamp, using the Muffsy Phono Preamp, the Hifi Power Supply and the Back Panel. J...
