Resistors in the Audio Path of the Muffsy Phono Preamp

One of the ways you can modify the Muffsy Phono Preamp, is to use different components. Although the parts that come with the kit are of the highest quality, there is one component that many like to replace. That part is the innocent little resistor.

Audiophile grade resistors

As you can see from this picture, these resistors are usually much larger than the standard metal film resistors.

For an audiophile component, it would only make sense to use it in the audio path, which is why there is extra space around the audio path resistors on the Muffsy Phono Preamp PCB:

Components in the Muffsy Phono Preamp audio path

The picture above shows the components in the audio path of the Muffsy Phono Preamp. As you can see, there are only five of them for each channel:

  • Two resistors
  • Two operational amplifiers
  • One capacitor

The 2k2 ohm and 16k ohm resistors can be replaced with audiophile grade resistors, while the rest are best left as default.

Other Audio Path Components

Using sockets for the operational amplifiers will give you the opportunity to replace them as many times as you'd like. The circuit has been designed specifically to stop operational amplifiers from oscillating, letting you use any dual op amp you'd like.

The output capacitors are obviously also in the audio path. The capacitors that come with the kit have 5 mm leg spacing. The printed circuit board also will accept capacitors with 10 mm leg spacing directly, and up to 15 mm leg spacing with some careful bending of the component pins.

Having the option of replacing every component in the audio path is one of the great benefits of the Muffsy Phono Preamp, and you are encouraged to experiment with any combination that will suit your exact needs.
